Tuesday 20th February - The return to Christchurch

I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen a weather app predicting 100% chance of rain for a full 24 hours period, but that is what we have today!  And, so far, it’s spot on.

No rush today. The road we travelled yesterday from Kaikoura has already been closed today due to the torrential rain, so we felt we should make it into Christchurch in reasonable time before the roads here get any worse.

Straight to North South Holiday Park who were great and let us check-in early meaning that we could empty the van directly into our cabin.  We then cleaned it out, topped up the tank and headed back to Happy Campers to deliver our last camper.  The girl signing us back seemed oblivious to any of the issues we had with equipment early on but was not overly concerned by any of it and we got our refund for the replacement camping stove.

The shuttle bus gave us a lift to the Lone Star bar… the place we started our South Island trip two weeks ago! The rain continued to pour and we started to notice that flights in and out of some NZ airports had been cancelled due to the weather.  The storm appears to be hitting the country further south than first thought meaning that Christchurch is due to get a larger volume of rain.  They have announced a state of emergency here due to the increased risk of flooding on the coast.  There is nothing we can do except hope that the worst has passed by tomorrow morning.

A colleague and friend from Essex is visiting his family here and just happened to be landing in Christchurch this afternoon!  We had arranged to meet him in the Lone Star for a quick beer and catch up, though we were doubting he would be up for it after the 27-hour journey.  But, true to his word, Tapps turned up about 230pm along with his sister, young nephew and father.  We had a good chin-wag for as long as they dared, risking their journey home whilst roads were being closed left, right and centre.  Simon and I then ordered some lunch before returning to the cabin to finish packing and try to get some rest before a long journey tomorrow.
