We didn’t want to leave our swanky apartment but there was
an 11am check out and we had a flight to catch two countries west! We had to go on the toll roads in order for
us to make the return to Barcelona in time for our flights on Wednesday, no
scenic route for us this time.

Above and below, not a bad spot for lunch? |
However, we did break away from the motorways for lunch on
an Italian beach (above) followed by a detour around Monaco to visit yet another
F1 track (below). Unlike a previous visit to the principality in 2008, I kept
control of our vehicle whilst Simon was in charge of photography, meaning that
we avoided a traffic fine from someone being too excited to follow basic road
signage (but that’s another story!)

Tonight was our ‘winging it’ night when we hadn’t booked any
accommodation in advance. Crossing the border back into France we decided
around 6pm that we must be about half way back to our starting point and to
find a cheap hotel near Cannes. Not as
difficult as you may think, we checked into a B&B hotel last minute for
only about £60. Okay, so the room was extremely basic and characterless but it
had a bathroom, was very clean and didn’t smell of damp! The difficulty was
finding somewhere for dinner without breaking the bank. There are a lot of people with some very
expensive yachts around this part of France!
I didn’t feel we were dressed up enough for a lot of the restaurants but
we eventually found one right by a marina which did pasta dishes at a
reasonable price.
