We had planned to take a trip into the city later in the
day, so we did a final, late morning shop to get the last bits of Christmas
groceries in. Dark clouds appeared and
we sought shelter before rain and thunder arrived. We had a change of heart and decided to stay
in to avoid the weather. We will venture into the city another day! We have solved the internet issues by
investing in a SIM card deal that seemed too good to be real – a $40 Sim card
for $15 which somehow also left us with 15GB of data to use.
We did attempt to go for a Christmas Eve drink in the Surry
Hills but it turns out that we were either in the wrong part of town or Aussies
just don’t go crazy on the eve of Christmas like us Brits do. The streets were strangely deserted. The bar we intended to patronise had two
people in it – so we kept on walking. We
found another pub with an upstairs balcony area that looked relatively busy but
when we walked up to the doorman he said they weren’t letting any more people
in as they were closing! - It wasn’t
even 10pm!! We must’ve looked desperate
and promised to only have ‘the one’ so that he let us in. We ended up having two… but it wasn’t the
sociable high time we were hoping for and we were home just after 11pm.
Cocktails on the balcony.... an attempted 'big' night out on Christmas Eve |
Not a bad attempt at a Christmas dinner on the balcony |
As planned, on Christmas Day we didn’t go out. Allowing for the time difference, we spoke to
as many family members as possible and feasted on roast turkey after nearly
setting fire to the oven whilst cooking Yorkshire puddings. I even managed to
squeeze in my yearly dose of the film ‘Elf’ and whilst we were not overly
impressed by the general Christmas television listings on offer, we managed
another evening of yet more wine and cheese…
