Tuesday 20th March – Bangkok day one

We had a very lazy morning.  So lazy, we even received a call from reception to enquire when we were planning on going out so that they could clean our room!  We thought we’d wait for the temperature to drop a degree or two before venturing onto the hot streets.

Following our rules for visiting a city we went to visit our ‘somewhere high’ place today, the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, Thailand’s tallest hotel with a revolving viewing platform 84 stories up.  It was only a short walk from our hotel through the incredibly busy and bustling Pratunum markets. We got our tickets and ascended on the highest transparent elevator in Thailand.   The building is 309 metres tall with 2060 steps if you choose not to take the lift! We took our time doing the full 360° view on a couple of different levels what a huge chaotic City!

A panorama for starters

Randomly, our ticket to the viewing platform also included a free 20-minute foot massage and a drink in the hotel spa.  I was convinced they’d try to sell us something else, but the lure of the freebie was too much!  The foot massage was incredibly relaxing and we were given a refreshing iced juice afterwards.  No tricks or cons.  I shouldn’t be such a cynic all the time…
Before we’d even left the hotel foyer, the shopping began.  And boy, did we shop?!  We decided that Thailand would be a much cheaper place to stock up with some clothes and essentials for our new adventure, than to wait until our arrival in New Zealand.  We’d done some haggling to purchase an additional suitcase as our flights into NZ come with two free cases in the hold each. With Simon potentially starting work soon, he needed to invest in some smarter clothing and shoes for the office.  For me, it was time to replace the clothes and shoes with holes in that I have been wearing for the last 18 months!  Replacements for my holey converse, some trainers to help me get back to the gym, a new laptop bag where the handle isn’t about to come off and even a handbag that I have coped without for the last six months.  We haven’t spent money on ourselves like this for ages.  And we managed to haggle some money off in most cases.  We didn’t go crazy, we each had a total of only £100 each but that seemed to be more than enough for what we needed.  After a couple of hours, we took a break for beers and food to re-energize and get back out there to finish the job! By 830pm we were wheeling a suitcase full of merchandise around the streets of Bangkok.  That was enough for one day!
