Sunday 23rd April – Monday 24th April – Exploring Calgary and recharging our batteries

No alarm set this morning.  The pace of the last couple of weeks has clearly hit us hard.  I managed to lie in until 9am which is great for me, but that’s nothing compared to Simon who finally roused at noon!  This is despite the Halls having workmen in, who were building them a new deck outside in the snow.  His ability to sleep is incredible…. And sometimes annoying I have to admit, but I’m probably just jealous.

My main quest for the day – laundry.  Everything smells of smoke so we were grateful for the opportunity to do a mass freshen-up! I started catching up with the blog and we watched the first part of a documentary with Billy Connolly traversing the wilder side of Canada.  Must get around to finishing the series sometime.  I made the most of having a gym available whilst watching a documentary on Back-to-the-future, because it’s one of the best film series EVER (in my opinion). That was as much as we did today, until Mark got back from work when we had shepherd’s pie for dinner and re-visited ‘Paul’ on blue-ray in the cinema room.  It was great to have a complete down day.

Monday morning was along a similar vein - relaxing, sleeping in and starting to put the RV back into some semblance of order.  There had been heavy snow overnight again but the roads were fine for us to venture out in the afternoon and visit the Olympic Park. Famed for the 1988 Winter Olympics where not only did Eddie ‘the eagle’ Edwards have his time in the limelight but also the Jamaican bobsleigh team participated for the first time, later immortalised in the film ‘Cool Runnings’. The original bobsleigh used in the 1993 Disney movie still takes pride of place outside the main entrance (right). It would have been wrong for us not to have had a go in it.

We make this winter sport malarkey look easy!

Bobsleigh/ luge track

There were added opportunities to capture classic sporting moments and we got distant views of the ski-jumps and slopes but the Park was mostly closed.  This was confirmed when we visited guest services to ask about tubing or sledging opportunities.  Both shut.  How about the Olympic Hall of Fame, that would be good to see?  Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.  Our timing was poor.

There was nothing stopping us driving around the park to get up close and personal to the bobsleigh and luge track built in 1986 for the Olympics at a cost of $18.8 million. Still classed as one of the most heavily used in the World today, with approximately 18,000 descents a year (left).

Preparing to head back onto the open road we did a grocery shop and filled the petrol tank before heading back to Hall Manor.  As a thank you to the Halls we took them for a meal out at the Canadian Brewhouse in Cochrane.  The beer, food and company was great but we called it a night reasonably early for Mark’s sake.  Back at the house, we said our goodbyes and parted with the promise that we’d happily return the favour to accommodate them whenever and wherever we finally decide to stop!  Massive thanks to the Halls for their hospitality.
