Friday 11th November – Crossing Missouri

I wasn’t planning to make a separate entry for today.  All I have in my records was a long day’s drive across Missouri and ANOTHER expensive visit to Walmart!

Crossing the Missouri River
However, Simon reminded me that this was the first occasion he took an opportunity to cause us to deviate from the tedium of the Interstate to try our luck visiting an Air Force Base.  Whiteman Air Force Base, adjacent to Knob Noster and Knob Noster State Park (tee hee), is the home of B2 stealth bombers.  As such, sadly they weren’t in the business of letting random British couples, who show an interest, into the base for a stroll about. Though further to this, it was also ‘Veterans Day’ so the base staff spent time with their families – meaning no flying today!  So, the best we could hope for was catching sight of this B29 Superfortress next to the front gate.

However, this did motivate Simon to do a detailed search of the rest of the US Atlas looking out for further Air Force Base opportunities (let’s call them AFB’s from now on…. And there’s LOTS). Simon has had a life-long interest in military aviation so inspiration struck him to maximise the opportunities to view a wide variety of planes whilst in the USA.

From the AFB it was a short drive on West to the outskirts of Kansas City to a place called Lone Jack where we stayed in Lake Paradise campsite – it was okay, but paradise was putting it somewhat strongly!
