We’d driven as far West as we planned to for now and done
some extra mileage to make it to Dodge.
We were glad that we had made the effort to get there but we weren’t sad
to be leaving the atmospheric odour behind!
Plus, we had a gig to get to in Dallas….. tomorrow! We drove South towards Oklahoma. Again, the expanse of land we were journeying
through is hard to put into words. Acres
upon acres of cattle fields, cornfields with those water pumps and fans
symbolic of the West, prairie and rows of telegraph poles for miles in all
directions. Very few trees at all. An opportunity for another Spanish
lesson! As soon as we got into Oklahoma
the scenery changed, becoming more picturesque and varied. It’s incredible how much of a change is noticeable
in only a few miles from one state into another.
We had booked ourselves in for one night at a campsite in
Chickasha which is just to the South-East of Oklahoma City. Because we had to get to Dallas for tomorrow
we would not have time to go into the City itself unfortunately.
Another not-so-crazy night in the RV so I thought I’d just randomly check my emails…. ‘Your event has been
cancelled’ appeared in my inbox.
What?! The entire reason we had
just driven all day and planned the last two weeks was so that we could make
the Morrissey gig tomorrow night in Dallas.
The email was dated today so it was a very last-minute cancellation we
couldn’t have known about any earlier.
It transpired that a member of Morrissey’s band had collapsed during the
previous evening’s performance and he was still in hospital. Fair play then, that’s a pretty decent
reason for letting us down I guess! Plus, all ticket-holders would be getting a
full refund. But it didn’t stop me
feeling very disappointed and hard-done by so I sank a few beers to wallow in a
bit of self-pity for the evening!
