After yesterdays jam-packed itinerary we had agreed to have
an easy morning.
This gave me the
exciting opportunity to squeeze in some laundry!
Becky and I walked to Candlestick Park near our RV
site (right).
It was not particularly scenic so we
decided we are better off heading into the City for scenic views!
Turns out that the RV park is right opposite
where the San Francisco 49’ers (American Football team) stadium used to be (below).
It has been knocked down now, much to the
displeasure of the fans who now have to travel over an hour to get to the new
stadium outside the city.

We had planned to go to Alcatraz today, expecting that
booking wouldn’t be an issue at this time of year. After all, enough of the things we have
wanted to do aren’t even offered yet as it is ‘low-season’! Why would this be any different? But we totally underestimated the popularity
of the attraction and discovered that there was only 1 tour available that we
can fit in and that was the next day! With
tickets for Alcatraz booked for the following day, we put plan B into action.
We called an Uber to take us to the visitors’ centre.
There was the option of a courtesy bus from
the RV park, at $12 each for a return journey.
But, having compared taxi prices, we thought that $40 return for an
Uber, which will drop us exactly where we wanted to go was a much better
deal.
This also turned out to be a bonus
when we were picked up in a Dodge Charger for our first drive into the City!
Simon was very happy and he kept the driver occupied talking about cars all the
way into the centre.
As ever, the VC was
a fountain of information!
Notably, we found
information about a San Fran beer crawl tomorrow night that would be a perfect
way to spend Becky’s last night with us!
Leaving the VC we were right by the old classic-style tram stop where we
could hop on for $7 each.
Our
ride took us along Powell and Mason.
We
hopped off at the junction of Lombard and walked up the incredibly steep street
to the section that is famous for being the crookedest street in the World.

From there we strolled downhill towards the
bay, taking our first images of some of the City’s most famous landmarks.
We walked out along a pier to make the most of a
gloriously sunny clear day to get better images of the Golden Gate Bridge and
the City from the water’s edge.

We needed some sustenance to keep us going for the
afternoon, so stopped at a Diner where we each had a massive ice cream sundae
whilst enjoying the view.
Re-energised, it was time to hit the piers and do some
shopping.
It was supposed to be Becky
getting her holiday gifts but Simon and I also ended up splashing out more than
we have done for the rest of our trip so far (but not all on ourselves you’ll
be relieved to hear!).
We reached pier
39 where we did some more shopping before visiting the sealions on their
pontoons at the end.
|
These two were having a power-struggle over this pontoon - the one on his way into the water lost... the one in the background thought it was hilarious. |
The sunset
was going to be amazing but the temperature had plummeted.
Becky and I left Simon in charge of the
camera to go and secure a table at Bubba Gump Shrimp co.
Despite my love of seafood, I have never
eaten at one of their restaurants before.
I was not disappointed.
The food was amazing, but left us all feeling
over-full and in need of a lie-down! Simon and I have added Forrest Gump to our
list of films that we really need to watch again as a result of our trip.
Time to call our Uber to get back to the RV.
