We stayed in our room all morning to use the internet to do
some important booking for our last couple of weeks in Oz. No spoilers…. Keep reading!
The XXXX Brewery in Milton |
We hopped on the 2pm bus to Brisbane transit centre where we
caught a train one stop to Milton, the home of the XXXX Brewery. Again, this
was somewhere I remember visiting back in the 90s, but I needed to check in
again as I’m sure the brewing process has moved on….
The factory opened in 1878 producing ales, with it’s famous XXXX lager being invented in the 1920s. Still one of Australia’s leading breweries, they produce approximately 250 million litres of beer here each year.

The 3pm tour lasted an hour and a half - touring the factory
and learning about the production process before the tasting session.
We learnt that, although we aren’t the biggest fans of XXXX, we do like some of their more recently invented lines – specifically their Summer Bright mango beer (me) and James Squires 150 lashes (Simon). They weren’t shy on letting us get extra free beer AND we were given $5 vouchers to use in the gift shop, so we invested in a stubby holder each – about time seeing as we’ve been in Australia for over two months!

The lubrication process already started for our Friday
night, so we found a local bar with a happy hour to make the most of $5 beer
options before getting the train back into the City Centre (pics of war
memorial/Central Station). As an added bonus to our day we managed to find a
hairdresser that had time to sort Simon’s Barnet out. I partook in one last Brisbane walk down
memory lane, enjoying a delicious Banana, honey and passionfruit smoothie from
the juice bar on the mall. They still make the best smoothie!
We walked across the bridge and enjoyed views of Brisbane by
night.

South Bank Markets in full sing on a Friday Night |
We wandered into the South
Bank markets but didn’t really want to spend any more money and needed to
eat. So instead, we headed back towards
the hostel in the West End where we had been tipped off that there was a food
market on this evening. We both tried something
experimental for dinner – Simon had something from Transylvania (?!) whilst I
went for vegan fish made of soy and seaweed!
Being our last night in Brisbane it was time to head back to
the hostel to pack for the next leg of the adventure starting tomorrow.
