The whole point of going to Hot water beach is to let
yourself enjoy the heated sands and dig yourself a hole to enjoy a natural hot
spring bath…. I wasn’t going to leave until we’d at least tried! Picking a
break in the rain showers we all headed to the beach, mere footsteps away, but,
alas, the tide was too far in which limited our access to the best heat spots
on the sand (according to some random people we met down there!). Fail.....
Becks and I
had a paddle in the edge of the rough waters but then it was time to freshen up
and hit the road back towards Puke (remember, that’s pronounced pookie, not
puke). We could’ve just followed the
same old boring route back that we’d driven on Friday, but why would we do
that?! I wanted us to take a detour to
visit a special kauri tree so I nagivated us along a more minor route across
the peninsula… on what turned out to be mostly an unmade gravel road! It was
exciting. Up into the mountains we went. The only negative being that when I’ve
taken us on an off-road adventure over the last couple of years it’s been in a
hire vehicle, not one of our own! In some bouts of heavy rain and with the low
cloud hanging ominously around us I felt nervous but just hoped the road
conditions didn’t get any worse.
It was slow progress but thankfully we made it
to the Square Kauri tree walk, a mere five-minute climb to see…. Well, a square
tree of course. Not sure my photographs do this mighty beauty of nature
justice.
Our next stop for Sunday afternoon was our usual weekend
haunt, the Kellas’s. We couldn’t let Becks come to stay without meeting our new
besties, could we? And of course getting involved in some darts action. I was
the sober driver today, having to call time on the festivities at a reasonable
hour as Becks and I had some packing to do for our early morning travels the
next day.
The weather may have let us down somewhat but it had been a
very enjoyable weekend indeed.
