No time for a lie-in today though, we had some serious
mileage to cover to make it all the way round to Fjordland.
Tearing ourselves away from Lake Tekapo we made steady
progress, allowing ourselves to take a break at AJ Hackett bungee’s original
home in the Gibbston valley:

Stopping briefly for a top-up shop on our way past Queenstown (we’ll be
back) I have to hand it to Becks who did most of the driving for the rest of
the day whilst I suffered a migraine. Fair play to her, we made it to the DOC
camp site by Lake Te Anau in good time.
This was to be our ‘roughing it’ night. I felt that it would be a good
experience for us both to stay at a more remote basic site, so we put our cash
in an envelope and then began the arduous and surprisingly lengthy decision of
where to set ourselves up.
In a mostly vacant campsite there was a lot of choice… But we finally settled for a flat spot next to some trees, near enough the pit toilet for a middle of the night event but far enough away to prevent any odour! Cooking outside wasn’t an option when the rain began but we were both pretty tired from the late night and long drive, so I set to making dinner whilst Beck set up the cards. I’d opened the boot a little as it was warm and it’s also necessary when cooking inside a vehicle with gas. Then I noticed a mosquito. Then another one. And another. Inside the van. Becks had been bitten on the ankle. I slammed the boot closed and the game was afoot! We were like mosquito-swatting ninjas! But who’d have guessed that over 30 had already managed to get inside the vehicle in that short time…. There were squashed mosquitos everywhere. We couldn’t relax and get comfortable until we were happy that we’d caught every last one. Then we could collapse!
