We had been in Florida for over a month of our stay but
today it was finally time to leave. We
drove west into Alabama, only intending to travel through the state and make
ground, rather than stopping for any reason.
However, as we crossed the bay at Mobile, Simon spotted the USS Alabama
moored in the harbour. As it also
happened to be lunchtime, this seemed as good a spot as any to park up for a
break. It wasn’t just the Alabama in the
park, it was an entire battleship memorial park containing bombers, tanks and
other military and forces vehicles.

Calamity Jane - painted black as she flew night missions, very successfully according to her bomb rate! |
|
9/11 fallen heroes memorial - the granite blocks in the background represent the twin towers, the memorial is to honour all of the men and women of Alabama who have died serving their country since September 11, 2001. |

A Huey helicopter |

Patriot partners memorial - commemorating the military dogs and their handlers from Alabama who have served their country |
|
USS Alabama (nickname 'Lucky A') - commissioned in 1942, served in WWII in the Atlantic and Pacific |
We drove on into Mississippi. We had ticked two more states off from our list in one
day! Instead of heading straight into
New Orleans (which we expected to be more expensive), we stopped about an hour
short of the city in a cheaper PA RV park.
Trying to add some variety to our diet, Simon had spotted a recipe for
‘Ham and egg cups’ so we gave it a go this evening. Basic to prepare and very tasty! It’s been added to the permanent menu! We were told when we bought the RV that no
one ever uses the ovens in their mobile homes.
Well, we break the mould there then, because we use ours regularly. It may be small and have an annoying fiddly
pilot light but it does the job for us.
