It actually worked perfectly that we left our visit to the
cemetery until this morning, it was on the way out of the city anyway. Leaving three oaks around 11am it was a
ten-minute drive to St Louis Cemetery III (the third most important cemetery of
the St Louis’s?). We strolled around the
mausoleums for a while, one morbid goal was to try and find the oldest
death-date!
It was worthwhile seeing,
totally different from your normal graveyard.
The back 'wall' an example of the cheaper mausoleums available? |
The cemetery is very well maintained |
This is still the burial method of choice in
a City based below sea-level. We saw a
tomb dated from 2016 and one with a listed cause of death as Hurricane Katrina,
the after-effects of which are still felt in this area more than ten years
later.
Then it was back on the road for a three-hour journey to
what we’d selected as the half-way point to Houston – Palmetto Island State
Park, near Abbeville, Louisiana. Happy
to report that we found gas back down to $2 per gallon, hooray! Even before we’d driven through the gates of
the park we were greeted at the side of the road by this little fella:

– a reminder that we are heading back towards Texas. The campsites here are huge with the usual
facilities. As we have been warned of
heavy rain later this week we made the most of a warm dry night to have a fire,
especially as we’d stocked up on marshmallows!
But we have a confession – we really struggle to get a fire going
sometimes and tonight was one of those nights.
It’s so frustrating. How can wildfires start by accident and spread so
easily when we can’t set fire to wood on purpose on a dry warm night - with
added gallons of lighter fuel!?! Whilst
all around us are enjoying roaring fires…. I was a terrible scout. We still had
our steaks for dinner…. Just cooked in a frying pan with added garlic. It was tasty, and you can’t do that on a fire
grill so it was actually much better that way.
Didn’t get any toasted marshmallows though…
