It was raining heavily in the morning, I woke up to catch up
on some admin before a 3-hour drive to a campsite near Quebec, doing a Walmart
shop half way.
Continuing the French theme, we arrived at Camping La
Relache at 4pm. Our only option whilst
booking in was to try my broken French with the lady in the office and then again
with our neighbours who barely spoke a word of English.
This weekend is a huge celebration in Quebec as June 24th
is Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day. The 23rd
and 24th are known here as the National Holiday (la fete nationale)
which explains why the roads were extra busy today! It is a Festival of French
Canadian culture not just celebrated in Quebec but also other Canadian
Provinces and the United States. Our
plan is to soak up the atmosphere in Quebec City tomorrow but our neighbours
explained that there was live music and fireworks to celebrate the eve of the
festival there tonight and tried to persuade us that tonight was THE night to
head into town.
We set up and it appeared that the party would also be
starting early on the campsite. They set
out tables and chairs and speakers started blaring a mix of what I can best
describe as Euro-cheese and 80s-sounding French pop. I heard the Macarena at
one point. It was that bad. This nearly motivated us to go out tonight
but we both had things to catch up with – me the blog and Simon his Spanish
learning, though at the moment he could really do with some emergency French
lessons!
We stuck to our plan to head into Quebec tomorrow and
enjoyed another portion of our favourite Canadian cuisine - Poutine &
chicken for dinner.
