We checked out knowing that it would be a day on the road in
the most part. In no particular rush, we
stopped off at the VC to use their Wi-Fi for over an hour! I’m sure they’re used to it… We filled up
before starting our journey back down the same 128km we had driven to reach
Denham on Tuesday.
Quite a diversion to get to Monkey Mia, but when are we ever likely to
be able to do it if not now?! And so
worth it.
Another view of shell beach as we passed in the opposite direction |
This seems a good point to review how far we have travelled so far..... |
Our intention was to get a freebie spot to camp in a rest
area again tonight. The budget was gone,
it is so easily done when we’ve spent nearly $300 of our supposed $500 a week
budget just on petrol! Back on the road,
there were a couple of rest areas just south of the town of Carnarvon which
would put us in the perfect position for a fresh budget on Friday morning to do
a supermarket stock-up, fill up with petrol and hit the road north again. But we were early. I mean, we would reach the rest areas by 3pm
and basically have nothing to do for the rest of the afternoon until it was
time to make dinner and go to sleep. It
was different the other night when we pulled into a rest area just as the light
was going.
Change of plan. A
campsite is only $39 for the night, about £25.
Would we each pay £12.50 to park up somewhere with clean toilets,
showers, a swimming pool and Wi-Fi? Of course
we would! But first, to the VC where we
discovered that there is a link between Carnarvon and the space program (more
on that tomorrow) so that made Simon’s day, but the museum is only open between
10am-2pm so we’d missed that for today.
If we’re going to do that tomorrow morning then we really needed to get
the groceries today, so off to Woolworths we went (not sure if they’re anything
to do with the UK based ex-company).
Having spent our weekly food and booze budget we checked into the Coral
Coast Tourist Park for the night.
I’d realised earlier today that things in the fridge weren’t
feeling quite as cool as they had been.
I thought it was just as a result of the intense heat of the day. But now, parking up, there was the distinct
lack of any noise emanating from the condenser.
The light indicating power was reaching the unit was on but things
weren’t feeling cool and no amount of plugging in or tinkering (on a very minor
level, naturally) made a difference.
Shame we hadn’t noticed this before hitting the supermarket. If our Woolworth’s wares were going to
survive they would have to be decanted into the camp fridges overnight so that
we can try and get the fridge issue resolved in the morning. Well, I did say that our camper was an old
heap, so really, we should be grateful that we have made it two weeks into the
hire in one piece! Travellers’ Autobahn
help centre is based in Sydney. Meaning
that it was closed, being a few hours ahead on eastern time. I guess we will have to call first thing in
the morning to see what they want us to do about our dodgy white good!
