Friday 12th May – Farewell to the Mississippi and the return to Illinois

The weather is completely spoiling us at the moment.  Before leaving Pikes Peak we went for a morning stroll past the look-outs to bridal veil falls:

Couldn't resist another shot of this amazing view of the Mississippi...

Then there was no excuse not to start our five hour journey to Joliet where we have a two night booking at the closest possible RV site to Chicago.  I took the first stint which took us to a Walmart in Maquoketa, Iowa where we did a top-up shop.  We were hoping that there would be a barber within the store for Simon to get a badly needed hair-cut whilst I did a whirlwind shop, but sadly not.  We were advised there would be a salon downtown so we headed there.  Simon was looked after by Janie in Expressions salon who did a very thorough job, for over an hour – my haircuts take shorter time than that!

So there we were, still in Iowa, at 430pm with three hours still to go tonight.  I handed the reins over to Simon ‘the Stig’ our tame RV driver and I kept morale up by searching the internet for quirky Chicago facts.  Like, did you know that spray paint was invented in Chicago in 1949??!  And the zipper was also invented in Chicago in 1851?!  It may have made the journey feel longer for Simon but the time flew by for me!

The

We pulled up at Hollywood Hotel and Casino, Joliet about 7pm.  This is a Good Sam park and we were impressed with our $37 per night price tag which also includes complimentary breakfast!  The receptionist was also helpful with timetables for getting into the windy City tomorrow.
A quick dinner of chicken and chips and an early night before a very busy City day tomorrow.
