Saturday 10th December – Savannah, Georgia

It was still rather fresh outside but another sunny day gave us the opportunity to test out Simon’s new chain on a bike trail around Skidaway island. The woodland was beautiful, lots of different species of tree, many with what I believe is Spanish moss hanging from their branches (right).  Wildlife was also plentiful – woodpeckers could be heard all around but we rarely managed to find them in amongst the branches.

I was looking forward to getting my birding geek on at the observation tower but Hurricane Matthew ruined that for me (below).  I think Simon was secretly relieved!

We drove into Savannah for the afternoon and found a hard-sought bit of free street parking.  Savannah is famous as one of the first City’s in the United States, for it’s Georgian style buildings and picturesque squares throughout it’s centre.  We strolled down the waterfront....
I haven't missed out on my yearly
visit to the big man!

..... before heading into the centre of the city.  We got into a slightly festive mood by treating ourselves to Starbucks’ Christmas themed drinks and watching some carollers under a large tree:

The squares and some of the architecture was certainly pretty but we were comparing it to Charleston from two days earlier and we agreed that we thought Charleston just sneaked in first as the City that impressed us the most of the two.

I’m sure that there were events on that evening in Savannah but we were dreaming of a large camp fire and barbecue steak so we headed back to the Park to save some dollars and also do some laundry.  Crazy Saturday night! We braved the cold as long as we could and even played some guitar round the fire before our hands became too numb.
